Phase separation of polymer blends in solution: A case study
2016
Abstract The phase behavior and phase separation features of the quaternary system poly- l -lactide (PLLA)/poly-rac-lactide (PLA)/dioxane/water were investigated. Experiments were performed with fixed total polymer concentration of 6 wt%, by varying the PLLA/PLA weight ratio. Blend weight compositions examined were 100/0, 80/20, 50/50, 20/80 and 0/100, at fixed dioxane/water weight ratio (87/13). Cloud point measurements reported that the demixing temperatures of blends are close to PLLA in the same mixed solvent, in line with the calculated spinodals. As regards to foam preparation, above the PLA cloud point, morphology is similar to pure PLLA foams; conversely, below PLA cloud point, the …
TH-C-AUD A-08: Evaluation of Electronic Equilibrium Conditions Near Brachytherapy Sources
2008
Purpose: For high‐energy photon‐emitting brachytherapysources such as 60 Co , 137 Cs , 192 Ir , and 169 Yb , the main contribution of the systematic uncertainty in the dose distributions near the sources is understanding of electronic equilibrium and the contribution of β‐rays due to radioactive disintegration. Thus, it is important to study these effects in detail to accurately depict dose distributions near these brachytherapysources. This work studies the relative importance of β‐ray contributions to total dose (β + γ + x‐ray), and feasibility of using the approximation “collision kerma equals dose in electronic equilibrium conditions.” Method and Materials:Characteristics of kerma and d…
Direct observation of strain-induced non-equilibrium grain boundaries
2015
Abstract The grain boundary (GB) wetting by the melt and second solid phase has been studied in the Sn–Pb system both in equilibrium conditions and during continuous strain. The percentage of Sn/Sn GBs completely wetted by the melt increases from 80% at eutectic temperature Te=183 °C to 100% at 220 °C. The percentage of Pb/Pb GBs completely wetted by the melt increases from 0% at Te to 100% at 270 °C. Below Te only incomplete wetting of Pb/Pb GBs by solid Sn and Sn/Sn GBs by solid Pb has been observed after long annealing. However, during strain the lattice dislocations are continuously absorbed by GBs increasing the GB energy. As a result, the complete wetting of such non-equlibrium Sn/Sn …
Dioxouranium(VI) hydrolysis at 75 and 100°C in 3.6 molkg-1 LiClO4
2008
This work concerns the acidic properties of uranyl ion UO22+ at 75 and 100 °C in 3.6 molal (molkg-1 solvent) LiClO4 aqueous medium. The investigation was carried out by a coulometric-potentiometric technique. Direct and reverse acid base titrations were carried out in order to check the achievement of actual equilibrium conditions. Moreover, in order to reveal oversaturation conditions, a further check was carried out on clean saturated hydrolyzed solutions.
A reexamination of the equilibrium conditions in the theory of water drop nucleation
1975
The thermodynamic equations necessary to describe the conditions for equilibrium between a highly curved surface of a liquid and its vapour are re-examined. The complete equilibrium behaviour is reduced to one single differential equation for each component in an arbitrary c -component system. It is shown that this general formulation can be specialized to describe the conditions for equilibrium between water vapour and a pure water drop, the drop carrying an electric charge, containing a water soluble substance and/or containing a water insoluble nucleus. In the light of the present formulation, some incorrect physical statements of treatments by various authors reported in literature are …
